Seamless Circular Economy Showcase
13 November 2024 | NSW Parliament
I was delighted to attend the @Seamless Circular Economy Showcase which was held at NSW Parliament during National Recycling Week, hosted by the Hon. Dr Sarah Kaine. This was the first fashion show ever held within the building.
It was an inspiring evening showcasing responsible innovators and changemakers from across the Australian clothing industry and gave the opportunity for Seamless to release the latest clothing benchmark data. The statistics highlighted the need for government, clothing brands, retailers and the industry alike to join forces to address the 222,000 tonnes of clothing that went to Australian landfill in 2023.
This innovative garment shown was created by the Fashion Design Studio at @TAFE NSW and is a powerful example of reimagining and recycling clothing. Made from 53 pre-loved pieces sourced from @Salvos Stores, the garment included a foundation piece, skirt, pinafore top, and jacket, all weighing in at 9.5kg.
Why 53? It’s the average number of clothing items purchased by every Australian last year. This garment highlights our significant clothing consumption but also demonstrates the enormous potential of reimagining and reusing materials to create a more sustainable clothing industry.
As we work towards a circular clothing economy, let’s all do our part in reducing waste and transforming the way we design, consume, and recycle clothing. At Philosophy Australia we are proud to be a member of the Seamless initiative and are already looking into ways in which we can do better in the future.
